Yellowzine

Brilliant and very inspiring talk today by a brother and sister team that created Yellowzine, a magazine and online platform that promotes the art, design and creativity of black and ethnic minorities here in the UK.

They spoke about their educational backgrounds in English and in Graphic Design, how their interests in a creative career brought them to the realisation that the creative industry is quite a difficult one to break through, and that the percentage of people who are from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, although the number is slowly raising, is still considerably low in the UK.

It was with these things in mind that lead them to the decision to create their own publication, Yellowzine. At the time of the presentation, they had created and released two magazines, as seen above, with the first one, seen on the left, they said that they had only 50 copies made and had to order more due to them all selling pretty quickly.

With each issue they base the magazine on a different theme. The first was promoting illustration and the theme was 'identity'. The second publication was all about photography with the theme of 'space', with personal interpretations of the concept of 'space'.

They worked so hard to put this project together from scratch, both fresh out of university and starting very new careers in London, all of their spare time was spent putting Yellowzine together. They reached out to artists and creatives using online searches and social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, to speak to people about their project and get them onboard with it. Their second issue was supported with the opportunity to hang some of the featured art work in a local gallery, giving everyone involved the opportunity to come together to meet and celebrate the newest release.

The talk they gave of their journey was truly inspirational and it looks to have been an instant hit within London, with the third issue due very soon and the newly updated website up and running, I wish Yellowzine a very successful future!!
